National Make Lunch Count

National Make Lunch Count Day is here to us to take a little more time during the lunch hour to relax and enjoy ourselves! About the picture: Tessa, Ethan and I having a great lunch at Doolittles Woodfire Grill in Fargo, ND last week.

How to Identify and Avoid Phishing Scams
What is Phishing?
Phishing is an unauthorized attempt by a bad actor to gather personal information or credentials by way of impersonating a legitimate brand and/or a known contact and sending users to malicious/fake websites.
For Example:
An employee receives an email appearing to come from their bank asking them to login to their bank account. Once the user clicks the link in the email, they are directed to a login page that looks like the actual login page. From there, once the credentials are entered, they are “harvested” or captured by the bad actor for later use.
Spoofed eMail Accounts
Reviewing the sender display name is not enough to confirm that an email is from a trusted person. Cybercriminals can manipulate the senders display name to make the email appear to be received from a trusted source. This is especially effective on mobile devices where there is less information displayed, potentially only showing the display name rather than the full email address.
Urgent Call to Action
Emails having a subject or message asking the user for an immediate response or call to action can be cause for concern. “Free trip for the first 20 respondents” or “Your account will be suspended, login now to review message”. Anything evoking panic, urgency or anything to get the end user to respond quickly without thinking is a sign to slow down and make sure the email can be trusted before clicking the link or responding.
Personalized Malicious Emails
Some phishing emails that are sent out in bulk might be easier to spot due to the generic nature of the terms when addressing the user (customer, patient, employee, etc.) However, phishing attempts are becoming more personalized. Just because your name is listed in the email, that alone is not necessarily a sign that it is legitimate. If there is a link or attachment be sure that it is something you are expecting from someone before assuming it is valid.
Takeaway
Stay cautious and vigilant. There are tools and services that can help identify and limit exposure to Phishing emails as well as provide ongoing user training / education to safeguard your business.

Leadership 101 | Focus on Your 60% Employees
By Bri Williams
Quiet Types
You already know there are employees you are not getting the best out of. What may surprise you is it’s not the lazy ones. It’s not the shirkers. The ‘all talk no walk’ types. You probably have a plan for these employees, or you should.
No, I’m talking about those conscientious, hard working members of your organization that are doing good work, but they could be doing GREAT work. These are your 60% employees. I know this because I was a 60% employee.
Before I started my business back in 2011, I worked for some of the world’s best known companies; Coca-Cola, Thomson Reuters and Yellow Pages. I was a diligent employee who took great pride in my work. I was well regarded and promoted into ever more senior roles. But if anyone had asked me, I would have said they were getting only a portion of my talents. 60% or so. Why? Looking back now, I know exactly why. I know exactly what I was missing. What the company was missing. But back then, it was a bit of a mystery.
I’m guessing you also have many smart, reliable, personable people in your organization who, despite their best efforts, and attempts from others wanting to coax them along, are playing small. Hiding their talents.
- Being a little too slow to call those stakeholder meetings.
- Being a little too reliant on emails to communicate with colleagues.
- Being a little too shy to say what they mean or offer a perspective.
Here’s why: Business is not designed for these types of people. Sure, we rely on them, but we don’t see them. We see the dominant types who back their own judgement without hesitation and leave people who can’t keep up in their wake. We see the social types who are great at networking and profile building, and love being the face of a project.
But we don’t see the quiet types. The people who like to analyze, understand and think. People with an empathetic inclination and desire for good relationships. People whom you would describe as the backbone of your organization.
Well, it’s these people who are sick of being trampled, talked over and outshone by those they may consider lightweight. So they withhold. And as a result, you only get 60% of them. So, how can you bring the most out of these people? How can you lift their performance, and that of your organization, to another level?
Here’s a couple of ideas:
- Make space for them to share their ideas and concerns.
- The “right” praise & feedback (private email, public shout-out).
- Brainstorm better.
- Less meetings that are more introvert friendly.
